I feel bad that my little corner of the internet has been neglected for the past few weeks. My sister had been visiting from Las Vegas with my niece.
I really found it hard to motivate myself to blog when I had this Little Precious to kiss and play with!
I will admit that I am still 100% in the idea stage of wedding planning. I think I have some pretty definite concepts of what I want, but I know that at nine months out any of that can change. I find it really hard to commit to some of my ideas when there is SO MUCH eye candy out there in the blogging world. I've changed my mind many times about many details; our favors are no different.
I'm not going to lie, I've never really been a huge fan of wedding favors. Though my cousin did give some pretty delicious smelling soy candles at her wedding, every other wedding I've been to had the usual jordan-almond-wrapped-in-organza favors. According to one site, "jordan almonds symbolize the sweet (sugar) and bitter (almond) sides of life." Bleh. I know one thing for certain: I want our guests to feel like we put a little bit of time and thought into their small token of appreciation.
My original idea for our favors was to play on the fact that B is Canadian and I'm American... while trying to avoid a patriotic look. I wanted edible favors; most little nic-naccy things are a waste of money IMO. So. What's more American than Apple Pie? (it's just a bonus that I happen to luurve me some apple pie) Hrm. Canadian. The only thing that I could think of that was really Canadian was poutine, but it'd be pretty difficult to put poutine into pretty packaging. B didn't help when he suggested donuts. Donuts do not say "Canada" to me, do they to you? I'm not sure what I was looking for when I came across some cute little bottles of maple syrup in bottles shaped like maple leaves.
I thought the whole idea was pretty clever, even if everyone I told said I was crazy for thinking I was going to bake 100 tiny pies the week of the wedding.
Anyway, the tiny pie-maple syrup favors were one of my first wedding ideas back in April. Though I still like the concept, I'm liking the actual favors less and less. The more I think about what I want our tables to look like, the more I dislike that maple leaf bottle. It just seems very Fall to me, and out of place at our airy Spring wedding.
Last week I baked some snickerdoodles for a coworker's last day. I used some fabric and ribbon that I had lying around to package a few for her to take home, (the rest went on a huge platter; everyone is a fan of that snickerdoodle recipe) and I came up with this for packaging:
A few of the ladies at work complimented it, and the lady who sits next to me said I should consider doing that for our wedding favors.
Annnnd, I agreed! Snickerdoodles will be MUCH simpler to bake in bulk, and half-pint jars would only take a few cookies to fill. I'm already planning to make our dinner napkins out of a variety of fabrics, a la Miss Beagle. Wouldn't it be cute to use different fabrics on the jars? Maybe with some raffia instead of the ribbon?
I really feel that the look of the mason jars tie into the overall image I have in my head for our wedding. They're fairly affordable, too-- though I'm trying to find some in bulk via Freecycle or Craigslist. I started searching for some inspiration pictures to incorporate mason jars elsewhere for a more cohesive feel. This is what I came up with:

And my aaabsolute favorite:
Cutest wedding EVER, from Lollipop Events. Alllmost makes me want to change our colors from red to orange. I LOVE the jars as a drinking glass. And the little flag on the straw? Way too cute. Do you think it'd be too many mason jars if there were two at each place setting? One as the favor and one as the glass? Gah, they even have buttons in the centerpieces and on the napkin's belly-band!
So, I'm not certain that I won't change my mind about the favors again, but I'm really liking this idea. What do you have planned for your favors?
I was a HUGE flip-flopper when it came to narrowing down my wedding decisions. I found that it helped not to look at wedding sites or magazines in the last couple months! Good luck! :)
